Philip was brought up in Cheshire and was educated at Sandbach School.  His artistic ability came to the notice of his inspirational art teacher, Alan Astins, who encouraged and helped Philip develop his technique.  Given this encouragement, Philip always knew he could draw and over time taught himself to use watercolour, his favoured medium.

A career Army officer, Philip commissioned from Sandhurst into The 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment in 1965 and served until 1997.   Army life was, and is, such that most postings precluded sufficient free time to develop this interest, so much of his work was accomplished during annual leave at the family holiday home in France.  Postings in Hong Kong, Northern Ireland, and particularly Belgium, however, also gave him enough free time to paint.

Philip was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease on 18th January 2010, and he passed away in St Margaret’s Hospice on 31st May 2011.
